Researchers look at boy-girl differences in autism

It has long been clear that autism strikes boys more often than girls. But when girls do get the condition, they tend to be at the severely affected end of the spectrum. Now, a group of geneticists thinks they’ve figured out why. Boys, it seems, can develop autism from a relatively small genetic hit, according to a study published today in the American Journal of Human Genetics. It takes more of a genetic wallop, though, to cause autism in girls – so when they do get it, they’re worse off.


Dover man creates comic book to educate about autism, help kids on the spectrum

David Kot has always been a comic-book reader. Now, Kot is a comic-book author. What began as a personal handbook for his study of the autism spectrum as a doctorate student transformed into “Face Value Comics.” The book is a steampunk, superhero comic that helps autistic children understand facial expressions and recognize emotions in others and educates others about the autism.


Internet Proves To Be Awesome As World Celebrates Andover Child’s Birthday

It’s been 19 days since Catherine Pearson sent an emotional plea to the Internet: Each year on [my son Logan’s] birthday, I close my bedroom door and bury my face into my pillow and cry. You all know I am a firecracker and not at all a “down” type of person. Logan has stopped getting birthday cards, birthday parties YEARS ago. I guess everyone realizes that he doesn’t understand anyways. This year, I want to stop feeling down. Catherine asked the kind people of the Internet to send her non-verbal Autistic son Logan birthday cards for his 12th birthday on Feb. 24.

To the woman and child who sat at Table 9, I did not introduce myself to you. My name is Tony Posnanski. I have been a restaurant manager for 15 years now.
